What to bring

Workshop model of instruction How we teach Workshop model of instruction Share learning goal Introduce topic or idea Get students excited Facilitate activity Summary and review

Role of Volunteer Guest of Honor Expert from the “Real World” Share/relate experiences to program activities and educational goals

Classroom Management Teacher will remain in classroom to assist activities, provide disciplinary action, and control the classroom. Connect with the students, greet them and introduce yourself, shake hands if you want. Be aware of recent or upcoming events in the school or classroom. Set a positive tone, don’t talk over the students. Walk around. Give immediate and clear feedback, “Thank-you John for closing your workbook like I asked.” Be empathetic; ask open-ended questions where a simple ‘ye’ or ‘no’ isn’t adequate. Be patient!

Classroom Management cont’d You shouldn’t be doing all the talking. Engage the students in conversation so they can learn from one another while being guided by you. Use positive reinforcement, maintain eye contact, smile, don’t use false flattery. Notice good behavior Bring in Treats! Swag, items with company logo, food (check with teacher 1st for allergies) Tell students upfront what you will be talking about and find out what they already know about the topic. As students engage in an activity tell them why they are doing it.

Open your kit!

Standard Items in Kit

If an item says NOT INCLUDED it is something the teacher can provide like crayons or markers, etc. Sidebars for quick reference Lesson plan included for each session Duration, number in groups, vocabulary, what to write on board, etc.

Volunteer Guides cont’d Extended learning Opportunities – optional Teacher Exercises – Optional Notes and Glossary ***Guidebook is written for the traditional JA delivery model in mind where a volunteer visits a classroom 5 or 6 times over the course of 5 or 6 weeks. In this delivery methods you will be teaching all 5 or 6 lessons back to back. The lessons have not been revised or translated into this format because it is very easy to modify the lessons to accommodate the 1 day schedule. You will note that lessons 2-5 or 6 spend the first 5-10 minutes of class reviewing the last activity. Since the lesson was completed less than 5 minutes ago so be sure to “skip” the initial review at the start of the lessons.
