What is National Voter Registration Day?

What is National Voter Registration Day? September 27th, 2016 National holiday Every eligible U.S. citizen can engage and register to vote at their current address.

The Origin Story In 2008, 6 Million Americans didn’t vote because they reportedly missed a registration deadline or didn’t know how to register Four years ago, a group of pro-voting organizations joined forces with Secretaries of State from across the country to establish a non-partisan day dedicated to voter registration NVRD was created by resolution of the National Association of Secretaries of State Origin

Who We Are National Voter Registration Day is led by a diverse, non- partisan group including MTV, the League of Women Voters, Bus Federation, Rock the Vote, Voto Latino, Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance (APALA), Fair Elections Legal Network, Nonprofit VOTE, former Elections Administrator in Arizona Tammy Patrick, and Secretaries of State John Merrill (R-AL) and Steve Simon (D-MN). Who

Goals for 2016 We want 2016 to be the biggest year yet: 3,000 partners 500,000 registrations 8,000 volunteers In 2014 alone: 154,500 + voter registrations! 2,263 participating organizations from all 50 states 10,802 volunteers

The Opportunity Last year, for the first time in NVRD history, the White House and both major political parties recognized National Voter Registration Day, encouraging people to register to vote. This year, state voting laws have changed, even as recently as a few weeks ago, and NVRD presents an opportunity for everyone to take the time to register and make a plan to vote at their current address. Opportunity

Why It Matters Low income earners and young people move more frequently. While length of residency and high voter turnout correlate, a major day dedicated to registering at current addresses will reach voters who are more susceptible to missing the deadline or not turning out. NVRD provides an education component for the political process Many people are unaware that they may need to update their voter registration after a move, due to inactive voting patterns, or to update political affiliation. Why?
