China petitioned the League of Nations for assistance with Japanese invasion. League ordered Japan to withdraw from Manchuria. Japan withdrew from League of Nations instead and continued to build its military and industry. Invaded southern Chinese cities in 1937, killing over 200,000 and engaging in mass brutality.

European territories in Asia left defenseless due to war in Europe. In 1940, Japan proclaimed their plan to establish the Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere. (Plan for Japan to take control of Asian territories instead of Europeans)

U.S responded to Japanese actions with sanctions and bans on Japanese materials. Japan responded by signing Tripartite Pact with Germany and Italy.

Hatred and discrimination against Japanese common in United States. Laws and restrictions on Japanese placed due to Americans feeling Asians inferior. Examine the following political cartoons from WWII. (Some are created by Dr. Seuss!) For each political cartoon, determine how the United States felt about Japan and those of Japanese decent during WWII.

What emotions are seen or assumed in the cartoons and propaganda? Why would America feel this way about Japan? What historical events led the U.S. to have a dislike for the Japanese? Was the American hatred of the Japanese justified? Why or why not? Take a look at what happened in America as a response to the war with Japan. Determine…Were the American actions against Japanese-Americans justified? Why or why not?

Island Hopping campaign started in 1943 to retake control of the Pacific. U.S. used Hawaii and Australia as initial supply posts until new territories taken. Islands taken one-by-one until U.S. controlled Pacific region.

Air attacks and kamikaze pilots went after American transport ships. Suicide missions, but considered very honorable by Japanese heritage.

U.S. controlled most Pacific islands, but not mainland Japan. Japan was asked for surrender by United States military. U.S. also concerned about establishing a powerful world image at time. August 6, 1945 – bombing of Hiroshima August 9, 1945 – bombing of Nagasaki 200,000 initial deaths from bombs Many deaths followed due to radiation V-J (Victory in Japan) Day declared on September 2, 1945 with World War Two officially over.
