History The Santa Barbara Mission was constructed 13 years after the first mission was built in San Diego. The governor, Felipe de Neve was against the Franciscan padres, but was very interested the the presidio or fort that would be built along with the mission. One the construction of the mission began the presidio was subsequently built do to the interest of both the governor and Father Serra. Governor de Neve delayed the approval and funding of the mission and Father Serra did not see his favorite mission built. Father Lasuen. Santa Barbara was finished and functional on December 4, 1786.

Mission Design The church was well-constructed out of adobe bricks which are made of compressed earth and straw. It had a red tile roof and housing for over 1,700 neophytes. The design was fashioned after a pre-Christian building in ancient Rome. It was destroyed by and earthquake in 1812 and was reconstructed in 1820. The mission stood for 105 years and destroyed yet again another earthquake.
