LEARNING ABOUT WORK CHAPTER 1

What does this mean? Quote Work and play are words used to describe the same thing under differing conditions -- Mark Twain What does this mean?

1.1: Why People Work VOCAB Work Occupation Job

Reasons People Work Earn Money (buy food, shelter, clothing, comfort) Social Satisfaction (meet people/make friends) Positive Feelings (sense of accomplishment/self-worth) Prestige (to be admired by society) --examples?? Personal Development (improve yourself, learn, grow) Contributions to Health (mental/physical health) Self-Expression (utilize abilities, talents, interests)

Work vs. Job vs. Occupation What’s the difference???

Work Activity directed toward a goal that produces something of value to someone and/or to society May be paid OR unpaid Examples??

Occupation Carry out work Group of similar tasks that a person performs for pay EX: keyboarding, filing, making phone calls, scheduling (secretary) Require specific skills or knowledge Learned on the job or in training programs

Job Paid position at a specific place Can be in an office, store, factory, farm, mine EX: nurse can work at jobs in a doc’s office, clinic, hospital, school, factory or nursing home Occupation is acquired first and learned through training / job is secured, may not need training

Work Experience Programs Work experience education Education programs that have been developed to help young people learn about and prepare for work as an extension of regular school classes

(Cont.) EX Co-op (half-day in classes; half-day at work) Must apply and be accepted by coordinator and co. Coordinator approves the student place of employment (TRAINING STATION) Stores, hospitals, restaurants, auto repair, salons All 3 parties sign a TRAINING AGREEMENT that shows responsibilities of all people involved All 3 parties develop a TRAINING PLAN to describe skills the student must develop while on the job
