Battle of Vicksburg May 19th-July 4th 1863

Grant Gets Another Chance Grant was given control of the Union troops near the Miss. Valley The other Gen. was called back east Grant knew how to manage a large army, and he could win battles But.. People did not like HOW he won battles Usually lost many, many, many men in the process Lincoln knew all this and still gave him control WHY??

Vicksburg Vicksburg was a city of huge importance Located in Miss. Sits on a high bluff overlooking a bend in the Mississippi River If the South kept this city, they could send supplies and troops to the Confed. army If the Union captured this city, they would control the whole Mississippi River And cut Texas and Arkansas off from the confederacy What plan was this a part of?

The Battle Grant went south of Vicksburg, and captured Jackson, Miss. This cut off Southern Generals from aiding their comrades who were in Vicksburg Grant then moved his army to attack Gen. Pemberton, and his Southern army He won, and forced Pemberton and his troops to retreat to Vicksburg Grant laid siege to the city Constant bombing and shooting into the city On July 4th, the city surrendered

Aftermath Now, the Union gunboats could sail up and down the Mississippi river, without any opposition Texas and Arkansas were cut off, and lost to the Confederacy Lincoln was so impressed with this victory Gave Grant command of all federal troops west of the Appalachians In March of 1864, Lincoln summoned Grant to Washington Named him Supreme Commander of the Armies of the United States!
