Welcome to PS/IS 499’s Coffee and Conversation Topic of Discussion: 2018 NYS Math Assessments Information Presented By: Ms. Griffin Grade 3 and 4 Math Instructor Ms. Adasse Grade 4 and 5 Math Instructor

2018 New York State Mathematics Tests   The 2018 math tests will be administered on Tuesday, May 1 and Wednesday, May 2. All mathematics tests will be administered over two days. As with last year, students will be provided as much time as necessary to complete each test session. For guidance around pre- and post-test standards, see pages 11-16 of the NYS Testing Program Educator Guide. Standards designated as September-to-April will be assessed on the 2018 NYS Common Core Mathematics Test. Standards designated as May-June are meant to be taught after the test. This document provides information on aligning standards to each time period. Some standards designated in the “Major Clusters” section are included in the May-to-June instructional period. Teaching these standards after the test offers more coherent September-to-April content blocks and allows for more logical sequencing for standards that closely relate to the Major Clusters of the following year. Information on post-test standards can also be found on: http://www.p12.nysed.gov/assessment/ei/2013/math-sept-april-may-june.pdf

Most test questions will target more than one standard; some questions will evaluate an entire cluster. As such, many individual test questions will assess the September-to-April standards in conjunction with standards from past grades.  The Grades 3–8 New York State Mathematics tests measure student learning aligned with the instructional shifts demanded by the Common Core Learning Standards. (See page 1 of the Educator Guides for more information on the instructional shifts.) The content for all tests will be based on the CCLS. The percentage of test point breakdown (referred to as the Domain Level Test Blueprint) will be as follows:

Math Tools: Grades 3-8 students all need individual rulers supplied by the school. Grade 4 -8 students all need individual protractors supplied by the school Grades 6 students will need 4-function calculator with a square root key or a scientific c to use on Book 2. Graphing calculators are NOT permitted. Calculators are not permitted for Book 1.   Students in grades 7 and 8 will need scientific calculators to use on both days. Please note: Graphing calculators are NOT permitted. A detachable reference sheet will be included in each of the test books for grades 5-8. They are on the last four pages of the Educator Guide. For Grades 7 and 8…a note about Pi: Students should know that π is an irrational number. For the short-response and extended-response questions in Grades 7 and 8, the π key and the full display of the calculator should be used in computations. The approximate values of π, such as 3.1416, 3.14, or 22/7, are unacceptable.
