Frailty Update Emma Neal Consultant Nurse, Fareham & Gosport
Frailty Definition A multi-dimensional syndrome characterised by decreased biological reserve across multiple organ systems and diminished resistance to stressors. Or ‘ a lot of things are broken or nearly broken’!
What is Frailty? IT IS:- IT ISN’T:- Distinctive health state related to the ageing process but NOT an inevitable part of ageing. A state where multiple body systems lose their reserves The cause of disability in some and the consequence in others Something that can be made better or worse. A long term condition Living with one or more long term conditions (although there may be overlap) Frailty varies in severity so people are not ‘frail’. They ‘have frailty’.
