AVIATION SAFETY AND SECURITY –AVS 2104- LECTURE 3 BASIC SAFETY & SECURITY SEM JULY 2011 AVIATION SAFETY AND SECURITY –AVS 2104- MOHD ‘ARIFF BIN ABDUL JALIL

INTRODUCTION AVS 2104 : AVIATION SAFETY AND SECURITY In aviation industry, the only thing that matter is SAFETY. Despite of making profit, aviation world will still prioritize the level of safety in the first place. “No safety, no guarantee”. Aviation industry needs to instill “trust value” inside passengers feeling to attract them to use airlines.

“Prevention is better than cure” INTRODUCTION AVS 2104 : AVIATION SAFETY AND SECURITY While the elimination of accidents would be desirable, a 100% safety rate is an unachievable goal. Failures and errors will occur, in spite of the best efforts to avoid them. “Prevention is better than cure”

INTRODUCTION AVS 2104 : AVIATION SAFETY AND SECURITY No human activity or human-made system can be guaranteed to be absolutely safe. Safety is a relative notion whereby inherent risks are acceptable in a “safe” system.

AVIATION WORLD SAFETY AIRCRAFT / AIRPLANES PASSENGER PILOT AND CREW AVS 2104 : AVIATION SAFETY AND SECURITY AIRCRAFT / AIRPLANES PASSENGER PILOT AND CREW SAFETY AVIATION MANAGEMENT TICKET CONTER CARGO AIRPORT FLIGHT CONDITION

WARM UP – LETS THINK AVS 2104 : AVIATION SAFETY AND SECURITY Safety and Security have different meaning. Do you agree? Why? Define or explain what do you understand by Aviation safety and security? “SAFETY VS SECURITY”

SAFETY & SECURITY AVS 2104 : AVIATION SAFETY AND SECURITY Safety is a condition, state or situation in which a person feel safe and free from any threat or danger. Meanwhile, security is a procedure or action taken to ensure safety of a person. Example: You’ll feel safe in a car when you lock your doors. Locking your doors means that you take security measures.

SAFETY & SECURITY AVS 2104 : AVIATION SAFETY AND SECURITY You’ll feel safe in your house during night by locking doors. Locking doors is the action taken to avoid your house from being entered by unknown people. When you walk alone, you can be attack by unknown person. As a way to overcome this threat, you’ll never walk alone and ask somebody to company you.

“SUPER RICH MAN” SAFETY & SECURITY AVS 2104 : AVIATION SAFETY AND SECURITY “SUPER RICH MAN” Base on character above, create one example or any story that can distinguish the difference between SAFETY and SECURITY.

SAFETY & SECURITY AVS 2104 : AVIATION SAFETY AND SECURITY Aviation Security exists to prevent criminal activity on aircraft and in airport. Criminal activity includes acts such as hijacking (air piracy), damaging or destroying aircraft and nearby areas with bombs, and assaulting passengers and aviation employees.

SAFETY & SECURITY AVS 2104 : AVIATION SAFETY AND SECURITY On September 11, 2001, when terrorists hijacked four U.S. airliners and crashed three of them into buildings and one into the ground, causing the death of thousands. This unprecedented attack resulted in an immediate and drastic heightening of air transportation security.

THE NEED OF AVIATION SAFETY AND SECURITY AVS 2104 : AVIATION SAFETY AND SECURITY Meet requirement from International Civil Aviation Organization. ICAO – Annex 17. Provide safety so that people will feel comfortable and secure. Attract more people to use airlines. Prevent any danger or harm to people (passenger). Smoothen the airport system. Avoid illegal things. (see video)

GROUP DISCUSSION: ROLE PLAY AVS 2104 : AVIATION SAFETY AND SECURITY 5 GROUP MEMBERS 2/3 of you will be tourists from any country. 2 of you will the enforcement personnel. 1 of you will be the Airport manager.

GROUP DISCUSSION: ROLE PLAY AVS 2104 : AVIATION SAFETY AND SECURITY Situation: Tourists bring things that could create possible threat to other visitors. (but at the same time they are so innocent and don’t know anything about it). They were caught by the enforcement officers and fought with them claiming that they are innocent. The officers bring them to the manager. Then manager explain about the aviation safety and security. Are the tourists guilty of bringing dangerous goods? Or are they guilty?

ROLE PLAY Try to make it as interesting as you can. AVS 2104 : AVIATION SAFETY AND SECURITY Try to make it as interesting as you can. It is not necessarily must a serious play. Make it fun, crazy and enjoyable but at the same time you learn something.

CONCLUSION AVS 2104 : AVIATION SAFETY AND SECURITY Safety is the STATE in which the RISK OF HARM to persons or of property damage IS REDUCED TO, and MAINTAINED AT OR BELOW, AN ACCEPTABLE LEVEL through a continuing process of hazard identification and risk management. The PROCESS of hazard identification and risk management is a SECURITY measurement.
