Workplace Communication

Communication Channels WhatsApp/ SMS Email Phone Conversation Face-to-Face Communication Amount of Information Transmitted

Email Etiquette How often should I check emails? When do I use c.c. and b.c.c.? Why is “Acknowledging Receipt” necessary?

in the following situations? How should you respond in the following situations?

Situation 1: “My supervisor is not too happy with the way I dress Situation 1: “My supervisor is not too happy with the way I dress. I don’t see any problem with it.”

Response: Just dress as your supervisor requests but feeling a grudge deep inside Ask your supervisor what his/her concern is and tell him/her what you think. Then compromise. Complain to your academic tutor that your supervisor is intruding your privacy on how you dress

Situation 2: “I am not feeling well today, I should take sick leave.”

Response: WhatsApp your supervisor that you are sick and won’t go to work. Email your supervisor that you are sick and won’t go to work. Call your supervisor to tell him/her that you are sick and won’t go to work. Email or Call your supervisor to tell him/her that you are sick and won’t go to work + submit the leave form in the Handbook (p. 29) together with a medical certificate

Situation 3: “I thought my job duties were to plan fund raising activities. Why do I have to help out with this ad hoc event? I feel cheated!”

Response: Sue your CP! Just do what your supervisor asked you to do, then write a complaint letter to his/her boss after the internship. Explain to your supervisor that this is not what you agreed to work on and compromise on the new required tasks. However, bear in mind that all learning opportunities are valuable for your growth. Be adaptive!
