Tucson’s Water Supply

CAP Provides Water to Central and Southern Arizona Is 336 miles long Construction began in 1973 and is operated and maintained by the Central Arizona Water Conservation District (CAWCD) Can Also Provide water to counties in New Mexico. Provides approx. 44 billion gallons a year to tucson

The Aqueduct

Aquifers Groundwater is where Tucson got most of its fresh water before the CAP. But the pumping of groundwater is causing environmental problems. The Land around the groundwater is sinking due to over draining

Blending In 2006 Tucson was proposed a Blending plan to conserver water. The plan is to blend groundwater with recharged Colorado River water. The water will be mixed at a Clearwater Facility in Avra Valley. If the plan is accepted by Arizona residents the mineral level will be set at no more than 450 mg/L , and more facilities will be built in Tucson to reduce the mineral content further. With a possibility of raising it to 600 mg/L or even going lower than 450 mg/L

The Future With the increasing population in Pima and Maricopa county the need for sufficient fresh water becomes a topic of major concern. The Blending Program is aimed to provide water till at least 2050.
