Faith Ringgold Born in 1930 in Harlem, New York, during the African American art movement known as the Harlem Renaissance, which began in the 1920s. The Harlem Renaissance was about Black Americans developing their own cultural identity and rejecting old racist stereotypes. Art from this movement included paintings, sculptures, poetry, literature, fashion, dance, and music. Ringgold, “Groovin High”, 1986

Ringgold’s art Ringgold was a public school teacher, a college professor, an author of numerous children’s books, and a prolific artist. Ringgold is best known for her narrative or storybook quilts. This one is called “Dancing at the Louve.” When you look at the quilt to the right, what stories do you see? What would your storybook quilt look like?
