INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE SURGERY ACCESS IN TROPICAL AREAS AND UPDATES IN ONCOLOGY November 8-10, 2017 Haiphong, Vietnam Study on the ER expression of breast tumor with secondary thyroid tumor and that of solitary thyroid tumor YaJuan Chen China KunMing Kunming Medical University

CONTANTS Part.1 Part.2 Part.3 Part.4 BACKGROUND METHODS RESULTS CONCLUSIONS

BACKGROUND Part.1

Multiple primary cancer means that two or more primary malignant tumors occur in a single organ or multiple organs simultaneously or successively. Diagnostic criteria: 1.Each tumor shows specific pathological malignant proves; 2.tumors differ in sites or organs; 3.one tumor is not metastatic nor recurrent from another tumor.

Breast tumor is one of the most common malignant tumors Breast tumor is one of the most common malignant tumors. In some of the bigger cities, its morbidity surpasses that of cervical cancer and reaches the top of the list. Thyroid tumor is also common. Primary tumors, especially breast tumor with secondary thyroid tumor are considerably increasing lately. The connection between breast tumor and thyroid tumor have started to draw more attention from researchers around the world.

The ER expression are higher in malignant cells than in healthy cells. The thyroid volume of patients with breast tumors are bigger than those of healthy people. Stimulating the growth of thyroid gland. The ER expression are higher in malignant cells than in healthy cells. These results all suggested certain connection between the thyroid tumor and estrogen. Expression of ER in 21 cases of recurrent thyroid carcinoma and 21 cases of thyroid carcinoma

Materials and Methods Part.2

Materials and Methods Result evaluation: The ER expression was located on the nucleus of the tumor cells, more than 1 percent of the cells marked with brown grains were positive. X2 inspection and Fisher’s exact test. We gathered the clinical data and ER expression results of 21 cases of breast tumors with secondary thyroid tumors and 21 cases of primary thyroid tumors. The patients were all female aged from 45 to 48. HE staining and immunohistochemistry by SP method.

Results Part.3

Results 1 Among the 21 cases of breast tumor with secondary thyroid rumor, 19 specimens were diagnosed as non - specific type of invasive ductal carcinoma(IDC-NOS), one was mucoid carcinoma and the last was invasive lobular carcinoma(ILC). The relative secondary thyroid tumors were all papillary thyroid carcinoma. In the microscopic examination, the infiltration nidus of invasive breast carcinoma showed nestlike, schistose or Indian file growth and increase of nucleus to cytoplasm ratio. The chromosome became thicker and the nucleus fission was observed.

Results 2 2. All the 21 cases of primary thyroid tumors were as well pathologically confirmed to be papillary thyroid carcinoma. As for the papillary thyroid carcinoma, the infiltration growth pattern was also papillary and the nucleus was ground-glass-like, the nuclear grooves, overlap and inclusions were obsearved.

Results 3 The ER expression of breast tumor recurrence in patients with thyroid tumor and thyroid tumor in breast tumor ER(+) ER(-) Breast tumor (n=21) 16 5 Thyroid tumor(n=21) 4 17 Chi square test Pearson Chi square value =12.291,P=0.000<0.01 ER is positive in invasive ductal tumor of the breast X400

Results 4 Expression of ER in breast tumor, recurrent thyroid carcinoma and solitary thyroid tumor ER(+) ER(-) Solitary thyroid tumor (n=21) 0 21 Breast tumor patient occurred thyroid tumor 4 17 (n=21) Fisher exact probability test ,P=0.053>0.01 Papillary thyroid tumor ER positive X400

Conclusion Part.4

Conclusion The most common breast tumor is the non - specific type of invasive ductal carcinoma and the most common thyroid tumor is the papillary carcinoma. The breast and thyroid are hormone dependent organs, the ER expression of breast tumor is significantly different from that of thyroid tumor, that is to say the ER expression of breast tumor is higher than that of thyroid tumor. Since both breast tumor and thyroid tumor were estrogen dependent, any tumorous one would certainly affect the other.

“early detection, early treatment” Hormone-dependent breast tumor with secondary thyroid tumor take an ER expression test and if the result is positive, hormonal therapy should be attempted.
