Guided Practice

Technological Advances Chinese society saw great technological advances under the Tang and Song dynasties. By A.D. 600s Chinese discovered coal could be used as fuel Led to the development of the coal-mining industry Coal and Steel

Coal and Steel When iron was produced in coal- heated furnaces, the melted iron mixed with carbon from the coal. This created a much stronger metal -- steel Steel was used to make armor, swords, and helmets for military. Also made stoves, farm tools, drills, nails, and sewing needles. What is the purpose of this invention? How is this invention used today? How did it travel to the west?

Chinese Silk

Silk The Chinese knew how to produce silk at least by 1300 B.C., but not until the second century B.C. did it begin to be exported to Europe, and not until about 550 A.D., when monks who had traveled to China brought back silkworm eggs, did the West learn the Chinese secret of silk-making. The Chinese traded silk with the Roman Empire and then with Byzantium. In return they received such items as wool, glass, and asbestos. Through the silk trade the world's two great empires in the first century A.D. Rome and Han China - were linked, mainly because Roman women wore Chinese silks. The overland trade route between China and the Mediterranean was called the "Silk Road" because China exported so much of this fabric to the west. What is the purpose of this invention? How is this invention used today? How did it travel to the west?

Independent Practice With a partner, you will now read 4 informational texts and complete the graphic organizer on the other side of the worksheet. These do not have to be completed in order. There are 4 stations set up around the room that have individual copies of the informational text. You will have 15 minutes to complete this portion of the assignment.

Time is up! Please return to your seat, if you have not already done so. Now we will discuss our answers as a class.

Closure

Match the invention to the scenario. a. silk b. steel c. compass d. gunpowder e. Paper f. wood-block The emperor wished to share a copy of his favorite poem with the court of Constantinople. What will he need? The army in the hills needs strong swords and helmets before its next battle. Sailors on the Mediterranean coast will trade for this item, which would one day help them sail to China. Western scholars have requested this to aid them in their studies. This will be used to make the celebration of your arrival in Constantinople bright. F B C Wood-block Steel Compass Paper gunpowder E D
