student affairs contributions to college completion Amelia Parnell Vice President for Research and Policy NASPA November 30, 2017

About naspa NASPA is the leading association for the advancement, health, and sustainability of the student affairs profession. NASPA addresses common functional areas within student affairs (housing, advising, conduct, assessment) as well as broad higher education themes (access, persistence, and degree completion). Our work provides high-quality professional development, advocacy, and research for 15,000 members in all 50 states, 25 countries, and 8 U.S. territories.

Naspa’s public policy agenda Student Success and College Completion Dedicated support for adult and other non-traditional students Documentation and meaningful recognition of prior learning Student Safety and Wellness Examples: mental health; sexual violence Cost of Higher Education, Student Debt, and Borrower Protections Inclusive Opportunities for Access and Success in Higher Education International students; domestic students of color; LGBTQIA students, undocumented students Civic Engagement and Freedom of Expression

Naspa’s public policy focus areas Title IX: Inclusivity, trans protections & bathroom bills, equity, sexual assault prevention & response, respondent rights Immigration: Undocumented students, DACA, sanctuary campuses, increased immigration enforcement, Free speech on campus, safe spaces, protests Guns on campus Regulatory oversight: accountability, borrower protections, for-profit institutions & veterans

NASPA research and publications Vice President for Student Affairs Census Emergency aid Co-curricular learning Use of Predictive analytics; Data and analytics for student success Student employment (on-campus) Publications 5 Things Briefs: Topics include support for student populations (international students, students with disabilities); and issues (sexual violence, assessment) Policy and Practice Briefs: Fair Labor Standards Act Overtime Rule; Safe Spaces and Brave Spaces

What do we know (from CCA) about today’s students?

NASPA connections to today’s students 70% are non-traditional. Development of new types of comprehensive records to capture learning from multiple sources (co-curricular, work engagements, military experiences) 70% commute to campus. Research on emergency aid; proactive uses of behavioral and engagement data 40% work 30 hours a week. Research (in-progress) on the prevalence and impact of on-campus student employment 25% work full time and attend college full time; 20% have children. NASPA’s public policy agenda includes cost of attendance. Mention the 4-year myth info from CCA: only 5% graduate on time from 2-year associate programs, 19% graduate on time from 4-year bachelor’s programs

How can practitioners help? Clearly communicate how to find resources and the process for engaging with various offices. Provide centralized and holistic support services (example: resources that address academic, financial, and career-prep needs). Give students flexible options to balance their academic and personal priorities (examples: adjusted office hours; aligning course schedules with transportation schedules).
