Teachers often tell me they don't have time to assess students along the way. They fear sacrificing “coverage” of content and insist they must move on quickly. Yet in the rush to move through their content, students are actually learning less. Without time to reflect on and interact meaningfully with new information, students are unlikely to retain much of what is "covered" in their classrooms. Another issue that teachers face when giving/administering a formative assessment is amount of time they spend grading the assessments. This limits their ability to direct their instruction in a timely and effective manner.

Formative Assessment The goal of formative assessment is to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by instructors to target their teaching instruction to student learning needs and by students to understand and take ownership of their learning with the end result of student learning gains. More specifically, formative assessments: help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and target areas that need work.
