We are SAFE. We are KIND. We are RESPONSIBLE. “The Big 3” . Our school practices a school-wide positive behavior supports program, or P.B.I.S. What your children learn in preschool will continue on throughout their years at MES. Of course, we approach it from a developmental perspective. For “respectful,” we say “kind.” We are SAFE. We are KIND. We are RESPONSIBLE.

“GROWTH MINDSET” INSTEAD OF SAYING… Last year MES introduced MINDSET SHIFTS. Instead of using a “fixed mindset”, we encourage a “GROWTH MINDSET”   INSTEAD OF SAYING…   “I give up,” THINK… “ Let’s try again.” “I can’t do it,” THINK… “I can try it!” “I don’t know that,” THINK… “But I can learn it.”

What do you do with a problem? In November, our school will expand our school-wide theme to …. What do you do with a problem? We will be teaching your children many TOOLS to solve many different problems, Including the HARD ones like controlling our emotions when we’re upset and how to be a good friend! We’ll be utilizing resources from these websites: http://challengingbehavior.fmhi.usf.edu/do/pyramid_model.htm http://csefel.vanderbilt.edu/ http://csefel.vanderbilt.edu/resources/family.html (FAMILY RESOURCES)

A Parents Guide to The Creative Curriculum http://jccsyr.org/docs/The%20Parent's%20Guid e%20to%20Creative%20Curriculum.pdf

Theory and Research behind The Creative Curriculum * The Creative Curriculum is based on solid research about how young children learn! * Your child’s education does not just happen in a school lesson! These 5 components have equal importance! * CC classrooms balance them all.

Part of the LEARNING ENVIRONMENT is our classroom Since PLAY is a center focus of children‘s learning, teachers will set up the environment to encourage specific types of learning. So your child is learning and integrating many of these objectives ACROSS ENVIRONMENTS As you EXPLORE THE CLASSROOM, look for the many ways we insert or embed literacy or math or problem solving into many areas of the classroom. Each center has a handout you can add to your folder that explains: 1. What your child is learning when they are playing in that center 2. What YOU CAN DO at home to support this kind of learning. TAKE a handout from each area to add to your folder If you have any questions, find me! In the KITCHEN, for example, we might add paper and pencil to make a shopping list, or take orders for a restaurant. We put signs on cabinets and baskets to help children know where to put things away. For reading material, we may add some cookbooks or other books related to the unit of study.

What are the most important skills my child needs to learn?

You will notice that all areas of development are equally important in an early childhood classroom. While learning literacy and math are important, so are the foundation skills of physical, social/emotional, and language skills. In fact, in the early childhood, these areas of development are quite intertwined. For instance, the large muscles develop before the small muscles. So large muscle development is crucial for children to develop the small muscles needed for writing, cutting, and even speech! Research also tells us that the Executive Functioning Skills, such as problem solving, planning, emotional regulation and social skills are more predictive of later success than almost any “academic” skill.

How do we find out what your child knows and can do?

WE. We In PRESCHOOL we. INTEGRATE content…. EXPLORE materials… WE.. We In PRESCHOOL we.. INTEGRATE content…. EXPLORE materials… ASK QUESTIONS… and LOOK for ANSWERS! LIKE… Just HOW BIG are those eagles? or How big is their nest?

What can I do AT HOME to help my child grow & learn?

PARENT RESOURCES Find some handouts around the room  Always ASK if you have particular needs, we have many, many resources to share on specific topics. You will find these and other resources on my “Resources” page of our classroom website: https://www.sau26.org/domain/184 (or you can go to MES Home Page and click on “Teacher Pages”)
