Role of School Counselor April 15, 2015 Role of School Counselor Academic: Course Selection and Scheduling Time management, study skills, advocate with teachers College preparation Career Military Social and Emotional Support in peer relations/peer pressure family issues, academic stress, co-curricular support, responsibility, citizenship Not to get them out of a test b/c of headache. Not disciplinarians. When extenuating circumstances we will asist the student advocate for themselves with the teacher.

Block Scheduling 84 minutes in each block Attendance A & B Days April 15, 2015 Block Scheduling 84 minutes in each block 5 additional minutes in block 1 for homeroom Attendance A & B Days 4 blocks per day Balance is important Review with counselor early Unit lunch Between blocks 2 &3, 50 minutes Great time to socialize, fuel up, and relax Balance: Benefit of a study hall block. Balanced for one student is even A & B day, balance for another is tough A day, light B day. Every student is different, and has different prefference.

Peer Leadership Program April 15, 2015 Peer Leadership Program Peer Leaders is now an academic course Applicants must be juniors/seniors During PE/Health blocks of peer leaders/freshmen taught by Physical Education teachers Freshmen are split into groups and have the same peer leader for the whole year Peer led activities focused on orienting freshmen to MHS environment and culture Often become mentors outside of the designated block

November visit Freshmen English classes Registration codes Learning Style Inventory Brief overview of the tools available Brief overiew, will get many details over the years, focus on the learning styles inventory, and intro to Naviance for freshman and gets them thinking about how they learn.
