Is Your Child’s IEP Individualized?
Why an IEP? IDEA – specially designed instruction will be provided for eligible students to address the unique needs of the child that result from the child’s disability and to ensure access of the child to the general education curriculum so that he or she can meet the educational standards that apply to all children.
Determining the Appropriateness of the IEP Involves… Recording information to be included in the student’s IEP. Analyzing a relationship between the needs identified, goals, and services. Comparing progress from year to year. Completing the educational benefit summary form to see if there are patterns
Constructing the IEP Involves… Discussing overall educational benefit – is the child’s program reasonably planned to result in educational benefit? Reviewing the child’s progress and adjusting the child’s IEP if progress is not made and/or addressing anticipated needs.
How To Determine if the IEP will Result in Educational Benefit… Does the present performance include all of the needs identified in the assessment? Is the assessment complete and does it identify the student’s needs? Are all of the student’s educational needs addressed by appropriate goals and objectives?
How To Determine if the IEP is Individualized… Do the services support goals and objectives? Is the student making yearly progress? If not, were goals/objectives and/or services changed? Was the IEP reasonably calculated?
How is Individualized Progress Measured? Achieving passing marks Advancing from grade to grade Making progress toward meeting goals and objectives Improved scores on statewide or district-wide tests and alternate assessment measures Graduation with a diploma and/or certificate of completion
