Question 1 – p 307 Author’s Purpose: Reread the first two paragraphs. What do these paragraphs reveal about the author’s purpose? HINT: What does he want to inform us about?

Reread the first sentence of the memoir. How are these words ironic? Question 2 – p 307 Reread the first sentence of the memoir. How are these words ironic? HINT: What is the “beautiful present” that he’s talking about?

Question 3 Read pg. 308, what did you learn about the Blockalteste from the author’s description? Cite text evidence. HINT: What does he know and what does he say?

Question 4 – p 309 Rhetorical Device- Allusion An allusion is a reference to a famous person, landmark, place or event outside of the story. What allusion is being used in the text? Why is this allusion appropriate for the circumstance? Cite text evidence.

Question 5 – p 309 Connotations are words that authors use to help convey tone within a story. These words can have a positive or negative effect. Read lines 67-73. Find a word with a negative connotation. What tone is created by the use of this word or phrase? HINT: What do the prisoners know about Dr. Mengele?

Question 6 – p 310 Reread lines 89-94. How does Wiesel describe Yossi and himself? How does he describe those who have been selected? Why might Wiesel have chosen to depict this contrast? HINT: Look at the word choice.

Question 7 – p 311 How does the author create a complex picture of the Blockalteste? What impact does Wiesel’s word choice have? HINT: Think about what the Blockalteste says, how he says it, and what he does.
