Chapter 7 Section 4 The Macedonian Empire

Macedonia Region just north of Greece. Present day northern Greece, Bulgaria, Albania, and Serbia.

The Macedonians Believed they were descendents of the heroes of Homer’s poems. They were fierce fighters and trained constantly.

Phillip II Became king of Macedonia in 359 B.C.

Phillip II He attacked the Greek city-states and crushed their combined forces at the Battle of Chaeronea (kehr uh NEE uh) in 338 B.C.

Phillip II 336 B.C. he is murdered.

Alexander the Great He was barely 20 years old when his father Phillip II is murdered. Alexander becomes king and goes on an 11 year conquest of Asia

Alexander the Great Alexander leads a combined Macedonian and Greek force of over 35,000 across Asia.

Alexander’s End In 326 B.C. Alexander and his army reached India. His troops had fought enough and they refused to continue

Alexander’s End Alexander died of fever in 323 B.C. during the return to Macedonia. He was 32 years old.

Spread of Greek Culture As Alexander and his army moved across Asia they brought with them Greek culture. Cultural elements such as: Greek language Philosophy Science Poetry

Spread of Greek Culture Alexander built the great Egyptian city of Alexandria which became a center for trade, spreading Greek culture even further.

Hellenistic Name for the new culture born out of Greek culture mixed with the cultures of Asia.

Last Days of the Ancient Greeks Greece remained under the influence of Macedonia for many years. In the first century B.C. the Greek city-states fell under the control of the growing Roman Empire.
