Pedigree Charts

Learning Targets I can interpret pedigree charts to analyze inherited family traits or genetic diseases.

“You’re a wizard Harry!” We’re going to read the following excerpt from Harry Potter. You need to be reading along and listening to the story.

Ask yourself… INDEPENDENTLY, (yes, that means silently and to yourself) What do you think the excerpt from Harry Potter has to do with pedigrees? To answer, think about what you may already know about pedigrees.

With your partner You have 20 seconds to discuss with your partner how you think the excerpt can be linked to pedigrees. Be ready to share your thoughts!

What is a pedigree chart? Pedigree charts are used to show records of families or individuals. They are used because breeding humans is not possible. Shows ethical ways of studying human genetics. Shows how possible conditions may be inherited. Uses symbols to represent the individuals and their relationships to each other

Complete the think map on “What are Pedigree Charts” your SISN.

Please copy down the various symbols that are used.

The half filled circles and squares show the carriers of the disorder

This shows that the disorder/condition is carried by the females but expressed in the males. This is called a Sex – Linked condition.

Here we see a family with 5 children. The pedigree chart shows that the second son is affected by the condition.

Below is a pedigree of 4 generations – 20 people. Generations are identified by Roman numerals.

Confused still? Maybe this will help! http://www.schooltube.com/video/c188ce8266b54a18992b/

What is Hemophilia? Hemophilia is a condition when blood can't clot properly, excessive bleeding (external and internal) occurs after any injury or damage. Symptoms include many large or deep bruises, joint pain and swelling, unexplained bleeding, and blood in urine or stool.

Hemophilia The X and Y chromosomes are called sex chromosomes. The gene for hemophilia is carried on the X chromosome. Hemophilia is inherited in an X-linked recessive manner.

Take 5 minutes to complete the practice notes below.
