Sex-linked traits. Sex chromosomes carry genes that code for traits other than gender. Traits determined by genes on the X chromosome are called sex-linked.
Non-Mendelian Genetics.  Some traits don’t follow the simple dominant/recessive rules that Mendel first applied to genetics.  Traits can be controlled.

Pedigree Charts

Learning Targets I can interpret pedigree charts to analyze inherited family traits or genetic diseases.

What is a pedigree chart? Pedigree charts are used to show records of families or individuals. They are used because breeding humans is not possible. Shows ethical ways of studying human genetics. Shows how possible conditions may be inherited. Symbols are represent the individuals and their relationships to each other

Please copy down the various symbols that are used.

The blank triangle and square Shade in half of the blank triangle and square next to the completely shaded in shapes. The half shaded in square and triangle show they are heterozygous and are considered carriers.

The half filled circles and squares show the carriers of the disorder

Here we see a family with 5 children. The pedigree chart shows that the second son is affected by the condition.

Below is a pedigree of 4 generations – 20 people. Generations are identified by Roman numerals.

Confused still? Maybe this will help! http://www.schooltube.com/video/c188ce8266b54a18992b/

What is Hemophilia? Hemophilia is a condition when blood can't clot properly, excessive bleeding (external and internal) occurs after any injury or damage. Symptoms include many large or deep bruises, joint pain and swelling, unexplained bleeding, and blood in urine or stool.

Hemophilia The X and Y chromosomes are called sex chromosomes. The gene for hemophilia is carried on the X chromosome. Hemophilia is inherited in an X-linked recessive manner.

Complete the pedigree chart in your notes.

Take 5 minutes to complete the practice notes below.

Muggle or Magic? Task to Complete: Complete the Harry Potter pedigree practice Complete exit ticket Turn both in 
