Birds Reptiles

Can feathers keep you warm? Can you design an investigation to test how well feathers can keep something warm? Here is some equipment that may be useful. What will you do to make sure your test is fair?

Today you will also make the next page of your book; it will be a sorting page on birds and reptiles with spring out animals like this crocodile. Your reader will take cards from a pocket at the bottom of the page. Each card will have a feature written on it. They will need to decide whether it is a feature of birds or reptiles and slide it into a slit on the correct side of the page.

First draw a reptile and a bird in the boxes on your card task sheet First draw a reptile and a bird in the boxes on your card task sheet. Try to make them as big as you can within the box. There are lots of different birds and reptiles to choose from. Use non-fiction books or the internet to help you decide what to draw and to make sure you get the details correct. Next colour them in and cut them out.

Now make a paper spring for each one Take 2 coloured paper strips and put a small blob of glue at the end of one strip. Stick the other strip over it to make a right angle. Then take the underneath strip (orange) and fold it up and over so it is now on top. Make a crease. Now the pink strip is underneath so fold it up an over the orange strip. Keep folding the strips in turn until they are too short to fold any more.

You will have made a tiny paper spring Finish it off by gluing the last fold in place. Trim away any spare paper that is overlapping.

Fold your cardboard page in half and glue a spring to the middle of each side. Try to position one just below the middle and one just above (so when the book closes they will not meet). Then glue the top of each spring and press down the widest part of your cut-out bird/reptile. Hold it in place for a minute or two until it is well stuck.

Now cut out the pocket from your sheet and glue 3 sides of the back Now cut out the pocket from your sheet and glue 3 sides of the back. Leave the top edge free of glue as this will be where the feature cards are put. Stick it down near the bottom corner of your page. While it dries, write a title to each page and cut out your feature cards.

Later, a grown up will put slits into the page with a craft knife so that the features can be sorted. If you have time, add a text box that explains the difference between warm blooded and cold blooded creatures.
