What is Voki? Voki enables users to express themselves on the web in their own voice using a talking character. Voki has come from a combination of ‘vox’, latin for voice, and ‘Loki’, the mischievous god and a giant from Norse mythology.

General Description Voki enables users to express themselves on the web by using a character to talk for them or their own voice.  Users can customize their Voki to look like people or take on a different identity of lots of characters… animals, monsters, anime, etc…

Demo Select Your Character Customize your character inc the background Add Your Voice or type in the text. Publish your work

Voki Activities Customise your Voki Make your Voki talk Play with Voki accents Embed your Voki in your blog

Customise your Voki Go to www.voki.com/create.php (it is not necessary to create a Voki account to create your character). The screen should appear as below: Begin personalising your character using the options in the ‘Customise Your Character’ box at the top of the screen. Cant decide on a character? Have the site create one for you! Just click on the dice in the bottom corner of the character display.

Please Note: Each options is limited to 60 seconds of speech. Making your Voki talk Your next step is to give your Voki a voice! There are 4 options in the ‘Give It A Voice’ box for making your Voki talk. These are: Calling from your mobile phone (for US & Canadian users only) Record your speech using a microphone connected to your computer. Type the text you would like your Voki to speak and customise the gender, accent and sound effects as necessary for your particular character. You will be using this option in today’s tutorial. Open a sound file (a pre-recorded speech or music) on your computer. Please Note: Each options is limited to 60 seconds of speech.

Play with Voki accents Your Voki is capable of changing accents. This makes it a great tool for use in the LOTE classroom. After you have typed your text, change the accent to hear the difference!

Play with Voki accents cont. Type the phrase Bonjour tout le monde into your text box. This is French for ‘Hello everybody’. Play the phrase using both the English and French accents to hear the difference.

Embed your Voki in your Wiki Once your Voki is complete, click Publish. You will be asked to name your Voki. You will be asked at this stage to create a Voki account, however this is not necessary to embed your creation into your blog. Click ‘No, thanks’ and you will be taken to the Sharing and Embedding screen. (You can sign up for an account later if you believe you will be a frequent user of the tool. Membership also allows you to save multiple Voki creations and gives you the options to edit them at a later time.)

Embed your Voki in your Wiki cont. Choose the size of your Voki Copy the Voki embedding code. Go to the wiki page where you want your Voki to appear. Select Insert Plugins > HTML/JavaScript. Paste the code into the box. Select allow JavaScript to run. Click Next > Insert Plugin. Save the page to see your Voki.
