SARS Introduction SARS is a virus belonging to the coronavirus family of viruses. (Same group as the Common Cold.) It was first discovered/reported in Asia in 2003. The disease is often misinterpreted as a nasty strain of the Common Cold or the Flu on first symptoms. Illness is often spread through respiratory exchange with an afflicted person. (Breathing in respiratory droplets) Can also be spread by coming into contact with an infected surface.

Brief history of SARS SARS was first reported in Asia, 2002. During the outbreak that lasted from 2002 to mid 2003, approximately 8,437 people were injured/affected by the disease. 813 people were killed. It’s thought that the disease spread from their on to other continents.

Indicative Symptoms Symptoms Include, among other things: High fever (Reaching up to and above 38.0˚C [100.4F]) Bad Headache Body aches Pneumonia Dry Cough Diarrhea Chills/Shakes

SARS throughout the Body When SARS enters through the body, (Either by ingestion or skin contact), it is quick to spread. It quickly invades healthy cells and replicates. It is known to target the Respiratory, Circulatory, and Excretory systems of the body. (Lungs, Liver, Blood cells, Heart.)

Complications with SARS Death rates in younger patients observed to be 9%-12%. Death rates in patients over 65 observed to be 50% or more Lung failure Liver failure Heart failure Lack of oxygen due to difficulty of breathing can lead to Hypoxia.

SARS in Daily life Sore throat, Coughing, and general body aches lead to major discomfort, and in severe cases, can get a lot worse. If affected by SARS, a person may choose to exile themselves until further treatment can take place, nullifying the spread. If one wants to limit the spread, but not go into quarantine, they will be forced to limit their public exposure.

How to avoid SARS Washing your hands virtually eliminates the chance of the Pathogen affecting your body through contact. Disinfection of surfaces. Wearing a surgical mask. Avoiding affected bodily fluids.

Treatment for SARS Quarantine of Infected person(s) will stop the spread in theory. Antipyretics are more effective in dealing with SARS. Use of an assisted breathing device like a ventilator. Other antiviral medications, such as: Ribavirin and Interferon.
