Tuesday 20th June 2017 Mathematics & English Tailor-made for Northumberland Tuesday 20th June 2017 “Our vision for all children and young people is that they achieve well in their early years, at school and in college, and lead happy and fulfilled lives.” Northumberland Education Vision 2017-2020

Tailor-made Northumberland! As a Northumberland Headteacher we imagine that you… aim to make every day count for every child lead and manage staff who teach a mastery curriculum know that quality first teaching is the key to success and… aim for your school be the best it can be

The School Improvement Team David Street - Commissioner for Primary & Early Years Education Claire Williams - School Improvement Lead (Maths) Louise Mallin - School Improvement Lead (Assessment) Damian Burke - School Improvement Lead (English)

Challenges? What are the challenges facing you and us? What does expected look like? What does greater depth look like? What evidence do we need to provide? How do we demonstrate progress? Mixed age / parallel groupings Small schools Distance Communication Even more important than you are the people leading Maths and English in your schools and the people delivering the curriculum...we want to know them and we want them to know us!

And...should we have maths books in Reception? How do you see our role? What scheme do I need in order to… Rapidly improve boys writing in Year 6 Rapidly improve basic maths skills Rapidly improve pencil grip Rapidly improve spelling Rapidly improve reading comprehension Rapidly improve reasoning skills And...should we have maths books in Reception?

How we see our role We are here to serve you, to support and advise Our aim is to provide a tailor-made service If you have bought into a scheme or philosophy, you have the recipe you have chosen to follow We see our role as working with you and your staff to produce the cake...whatever the ingredients! Bringing together members of our profession with a desire to make a difference, because we have already found staff in Northumberland with a real desire to know what is going on in other schools and to share & learn from each other

In Mathematics... There are a lots of resources available…but which one will, or is, supporting teaching and learning in your school? After 3 years of higher national expectations...where are the gaps in mathematics teaching and learning and what are the next steps? Does your curriculum support ‘mastery’ and develop pupils in your school who are fluent in mathematics and have the skills to reason and problem solve? Long-term aim to create and support ‘Maths Champions’ in each partnership or school

In English... We are creating a bank of information of the schemes and strategies being used in schools across Northumberland Moderation at EYFS, KS1 and KS2 is going to be used this year to identify good practice along with key areas for development Education Endowment Foundation Literacy Project taking place in 6 partnerships in Northumberland Long-term aim to create an English Hub bringing together examples of best practice linked to progress, attainment and impact

Tailor made? We would like to know how we can create a bespoke package for you. We would like to know your priority ingredients for your recipe. This is your opportunity!

Mathematics & English Tailor-made for Northumberland “What are the key areas of development within Leadership and Management and school improvement, for you and your school?”

Mathematics & English Tailor-made for Northumberland Thinking about teaching and learning of Mathematics and English How could we support schools?
