Naming Compounds Writing Formulas Nomenclature Naming Compounds Writing Formulas

Foldable We will make a foldable to keep track of the rules of naming all types of compounds You will write notes and do practice problems in your notebook

Nomenclature= Systematic Naming There are too many compounds to remember the names of them all. A compound (ionic or molecular) is made of two or more elements. The name should tell us how many and what type of atoms the compound contains.

Periodic Table More than a list of elements. Put in columns because of similar properties. Each column is called a group.

On the First inside flap of the foldable

Periodic Table Copy this outline onto your paper

Metals

Transition metals colour the transition metals (they are still metals but special)

Non-metals Metals transition metals

+1 +2 +3 -3 -2 -1 Group A elements only form one type of ion On your foldable :indicate the charge above the group +1 +2 +3 -3 -2 -1

In your notes

Naming ions We will use the systematic way. Cation- if the charge is always the same (Group A) just write the name of the metal. Transition metals can have more than one type of charge. If the element has more than one charge (most transition metals) …. Indicate the charge with roman numerals in parenthesis.

Name these Na+1 Ca+2 Al+3 Fe+3 Fe+2 Pb+2 Li+1

Name these Na+1 sodium ion Ca+2 calcium ion Al+3 aluminum ion Fe+3 iron (III) ion Fe+2 iron (II) ion Pb+2 lead (II) ion Li+1 lithium ion

Write Formulas for these Potassium ion Magnesium ion Copper (II) ion Chromium (VI) ion Barium ion Mercury (II) ion

Write Formulas for these Potassium ion K+ Magnesium ion Mg+2 Copper (II) ion Cu+2 Chromium (VI) ion Cr+6 Barium ion Ba +2 Mercury (II) ion Hg+2

Naming Anions Anions are always the same. Change the element ending to – ide F-1 Fluorine
