How to Get Published in NASA Tech Briefs NASA has initiated a concentrated effort to license (monetize) its technologies. As a result, we’ve been tasked with including as much NASA technology-focused information as possible in the magazine. For the remainder of this year, we are not able to offer the following opportunities to vendor companies in NASA Tech Briefs: Contributed feature articles Tech briefs Cover art

How to Get Published (continued) Vendors may still contribute Application Briefs and New on the Market materials for NASA Tech Briefs. Feature articles, vendor tech briefs, and cover art still may be contributed for all NTB supplements: Motion Control and Automation Technology Photonics & Imaging Technology Sensor Technology Test & Measurement Tech Briefs

Custom Media Editorial Procedures For custom white papers, e-books, and other media requiring editorial, the following procedures should be followed: After IO is submitted, contact Linda regarding what type of editorial is required: white paper writing, conversion of webinar to white paper, etc. Provide name and email of person who will be primary contact for materials described above. Call Linda to set up conference call with advertiser contact person to discuss editorial needs prior to assigning writer to project. Also enables deadline dates, etc. to be finalized in advance of beginning project.

Editorial Preview - 2017 Editorial sections that repeatedly score the highest in readership studies: Products of Tomorrow Application Briefs NASA Spinoff These sections all have one thing in common. They all focus on how technology innovations are being used to solve real-world problems – the reason engineers read NASA Tech Briefs.

2017 NASA Tech Briefs “Now and Next” Each month, a specific technology area would be highlighted, with the current state of the technology (the "Now") and what's being done to advance that technology (the "Next"). What are the “now” and “next” real-world applications for the technology? Provide links to videos demonstrating the "now" and "next” on Tech Briefs TV. “Tech Success” This section could combine Application Briefs and Spinoff, and feature stories of how technologies developed by NASA, federal labs, and other organizations have been used in real-world products and systems.

2017 NASA Tech Briefs Who’s Who This current column would be expanded to include engineers from other organizations, including federal labs, universities, and R&D facilities. In addition, on-the-spot interviews with engineers at trade shows and other events could be conducted and posted to TBTV, similar to NASA Edge. Web-Only Content Inclusion of more Web-only content for which we do not have either space or a current section. Examples include short interviews that highlight recent R&D developments, show or event wrap-ups, and other content that does not fit the magazine’s current format. Promote the content via INSIDERs and social media.

2017 Aerospace & Defense Technology Continue to expand May Unmanned Vehicles issue Expand New Products section introduced in 2016 – feature exhibitors’ products from AUVSI Xponential Show. More Application Brief stories Focus more on company success stories and how technology was used in real-world applications. Thermal Management supplement as standalone? Have the August 2016 supplement as an eighth standalone issue, similar to the unmanned vehicle issue.

2017 Photonics & Imaging Technology More interview-based features that highlight R&D innovations and their applications through discussions with the inventors. Technology Roundup – similar in format to MDB’s R&D Roundup. Short stories focusing on new technology breakthroughs. More application/success stories. Focus on technology being applied in real-world uses.

Editorial and Social Media Social media is an effective editorial tool when the content is timely or elicits a timely response. As of June 1, NASA Tech Briefs had 14,000 followers on Twitter. Twitter feed currently used by editorial to post updates from trade shows and other events. Incorporate social media as commentary on technology and mainstream news. When appropriate and available, link to magazine or Web content on that subject.

Digital Content Create more Web-only original content that can be linked from the magazines through articles and other features. Use more links to applicable videos from the magazines and INSIDERs to Tech Briefs TV. Use the INSIDERs and social media to promote both Web-only and print content.
