What does diversity mean to you?

Objectives Diversity is a core value at UNCW Conversations about diversity do not have to be scary! Recognize Intent vs. Impact Learn tangible steps to continue this conversation during your first year at UNCW

Expectations & Responsibilities Engage Listen respectfully Refrain from passing judgment Be open-minded Disclaimer - We don’t have all the answers

What does diversity mean to you?

UNCW Diversity & Inclusion Statement …Diversity includes, but is not limited to race, sex, age, color, national origin (including ethnicity), creed, religion, disability, sexual orientation, political affiliation, veteran’s status, gender, educational disadvantage, socio-economic circumstances, language, and history of overcoming adversity

Seahawk Respect Compact In the pursuit of excellence, UNC Wilmington actively fosters, encourages, and promotes inclusiveness, mutual respect, acceptance, and open-mindedness among students, faculty, staff, and the broader community. We affirm the dignity of all persons We promote the right of every person to participate in the free exchange of thoughts and opinions within a climate of civility and mutual respect. We strive for openness and mutual understanding to learn from differences in people, ideas, and opinions. We foster an environment of respect for each individual where differences are celebrated by the elimination of prejudice and discrimination through education and interaction with others. Therefore, we expect members of the campus community to honor these principles as fundamental to our ongoing efforts to increase access to and inclusion in a community that nurtures learning and growth for all.

Similarities & Differences Activity

The way in which people perceive or categorize themselves Social Identities The way in which people perceive or categorize themselves Age Ethnicity Disability/Ability Religion Gender Socio-economic Status Military Affiliation Sexual Orientation Nationality and Immigration Other identities? Race

Activity Recap Was it hard ask your partner about these social identities? Were there identities that were easier to discuss? Harder to discuss? Did your partner’s identities challenge your assumptions about them? Did you find that you avoided asking about any of the identities?

We are all Different and We are all the Same Be mindful when exploring similarities & differences in building new connections Don’t discount differences → that makes us unique No similarities? We can celebrate our differences

“I don’t see difference, we’re all part of the same race, the human race” Dr. Maura Cullen

What kind of Asian are you?

Intent vs. Impact Activity Dumb Things Well-Intended People Say “Some of my best friends are…” “I know exactly how you feel!” “You have such a pretty face.” When people of faith say, “Love the sinner, hate the sin.” “That’s so gay/queer” or “That’s so retarded.” Dr. Maura Cullen
