Indiana’s Climate & Wildlife Social Studies Indiana’s Climate & Wildlife

Climate and Weather Weather happens on a daily basis or over a short period of time. Climate is the observation and analyzing of weather conditions over a long period of time. Indiana has a temperate climate because it doesn’t get very hot or very cold.

Differences Between Seasons

Differences Between Seasons Temperature Amount of daylight Wildlife activity Activities

Globe Vocabulary Northern Hemisphere – The portion of the earth above the equator Southern Hemisphere – The portion of the earth below the equator Equator – The center region around the middle of the earth that comes into the most direct contact of the sun’s rays

Globe Vocabulary Axis – The central point around which the earth rotates Revolve – A larger motion around the sun

What do you think Antarctica’s climate is like? Multicultural Group Discussion What do you think seasons are like in other parts of the world, like Australia’s? What would be different between Indiana’s seasons and Australia's seasons? Explain why they would be different. What do you think Antarctica’s climate is like? How do you think Antarctica’s seasons would be different from Indiana’s seasons.

Multicultural Australia Antarctica Summer: October – February Summer: December – February Fall: March – May Winter: June – August Spring: September – November http://www.australia.com/en-us/facts/australias-seasons.html Antarctica Summer: October – February Sun never sets Winter: March – September Sun never rises http://www.divediscover.whoi.edu/ecosystem/infomod.html

Hydrosphere

“What I love most about rivers is: You can't step in the same river twice. The water's always changing, always flowing.” Disney’s Pocahontas

Vocabulary Water cycle – Water’s movement in the hydrosphere Hydrosphere – The system of water below, on, and above Earth’s surface.

Vocabulary Evaporation – The process of the sun’s heat changing water from liquid to water vapor Condensation – The process of cool temperature turning water from water vapor to liquid Clouds are formed when water vapor cools

Water Cycle

Lakes Like a pool, lakes take a long time to heat up and a long time to cool down. Lake Michigan absorbs and releases heat that affects Indiana’s climate.

Indiana’s Precipitation

Review – Main Idea & Supporting Details Several factors affect Indiana’s weather and climate. - What details from the lesson support this main idea?
