Mammals Endothermic vertebrates that have hair and produce milk to feed their young

Skin & Glands skin is an organ that protects the body it produces horns, claws, nails and even hooves it contains many glands mammary glands- produce milk oil glands conditions the skin sweat glands- remove wastes and keep cool scent glands- mark territory, find mates, defense

Teeth specialized teeth incisors- bite and cut canine teeth- grip and tear premolars & molars- shred, grind or crush

Omnivores- eat plants & animals Herbivores- eat only plants carnivores- flesh of other animals

Mammals have hair thick hair some just have a few hairs around their mouth whiskers to help sense the environment some are very specialized with quills or spines

Reproduction mammals reproduce sexually most give birth to live young

Types of Mammals 3 Groups Monotremes- lay eggs with leathery shells & milk oozes from glands on their skin (platypus) Marsupials- have immature young that crawl into an external pouch to develop Placentals- embryos develop inside a females uterus (primates)

Review – Birds They are endothermic covered with feathers lay eggs in hard shells that must be incubated until they hatch specialized flight adaptations- feathers, light skeleton with hollow bones, efficient body systems CURVED WINGS- CREATES AN UPWARD LIFT- AIR MOVES SLOWLY ACROSS BONES- GIVE EXTRA STRENGTH & STABILITY, YET HOLLOW FEATHERS- STRONG, LIGHTWEIGHT, SMOOTH AIR SACS- KEEP A STEADY SUPPLY OF OXYGEN

BIRD WINGS FLYING SWIMMING BALANCE WHILE RUNNING OR WALKING

BIRDS VS MAMMAL REPRODUCTION BIRDS lay eggs that are fertilized internally they are amniotic eggs that nourish the embryo parents must incubate the egg MAMMALS- give birth to live young must feed milk to their young by mammary glands

BIRDS SPECILIZED DIGESTIVE SYSTEM Food passes through the mouth to the crop where it is moistened and stored. It moves into the stomach where it is partially digested From there it moves into the gizzard to be crushed and ground Finally it moves to the intestines for the last stage of digestion and the nutrients enter the bloodstream of the bird
