Independent Clauses An independent clause expresses a complete thought. An independent clause can stand by itself as a sentence. An independent clause is also known as a main clause.

Subordinate Clauses A subordinate clause does not express a complete thought. A subordinate clause cannot stand alone. A subordinate clause is also known as a dependant clause.
