The difference between good clean fun and cannibalism! Punctuation! The difference between good clean fun and cannibalism!

Commas -“Go” punctuation- There are four main reasons why you should use a comma. to separate items in a list of 3 or more. to combine 2 independent clauses with a FANBOYS conjunction to separate an introductory word or phrase to separate a dependent clause (or parenthetical phrase) from the rest of the sentence Commas -“Go” punctuation-

What NOT to do with a comma Commas do a lot of things. But remember, there are something things that they just can’t do. Commas CANNOT combine two independent clauses together: that’s a job for FANBOYS and semicolons. Comma Splice What NOT to do with a comma

-shhh...don’t listen to journalists- The Oxford Comma is the name given to the comma in a list before the word “and” Example: I like ice cream, apples, and long walks on the beach. The last comma before “and” is the OXFORD comma. Writers argue that the extra comma helps to add clarity to the writing. Others, including journalists, say that it is unnecessary and that your point should be clear without it. The Oxford Comma -shhh...don’t listen to journalists-

“Half-stop” punctuation and smiley faces :) COLONS are used to introduce or emphasize SHORT phrases, quotations, examples, explanations, or lists. Example: Barry wanted to know why I hadn’t replied to his text: I hadn’t received it. Example: These are my favorite colors: magenta, orange, turquoise, yellow Colons “Half-stop” punctuation and smiley faces :)

“Half-stop” punctuation :-) DASHES are used to separate an explanatory or parenthetical phrase in a sentence. Example: Bob -on his way to the store- saw a lizard. Example: The white sand, the warm water, the sparkling sun - this is what brought them to Hawaii. Dashes “Half-stop” punctuation :-)

punctuations most misunderstood character Semicolons have two functions. to combine two independent clauses if the FANBOYS are not present (Most times when we write we are just going to use a comma and a FANBOY instead of a semicolon.) separate items in a list if those items already include commas or other punctuation Example: listing email addresses corey.josephson@detroitk12.org; josephson.classwork@gmail.com; coreylouwho@gmail.com; Semicolons punctuations most misunderstood character

the parenthesis’ weird cousin Brackets [ ] are only used when you need to add clarifying details to a quotation. “He [the police officer at the scene] said that the robber got away.” Note: Adding details to quotes and thereby using brackets should be done very very rarely. It should almost never be done. Brackets the parenthesis’ weird cousin
