ENHANCING STUDY ABROAD PARTNERSHIPS: ENHANCING THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE UEA Learning & Teaching Day - 18 May 2017

ENHANCING STUDY ABROAD PARTNERSHIPS: ENHANCING THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE - overview Gaining a global experience has become an increasingly important component of the student’s study experience. Meeting these worldwide ambitions to increase student mobility has led to a significant growth in recruitment to degrees with a year abroad at UEA, and in doing so has required us to develop quality exchange partnerships to meet this growing need. During this short session we will: Consider exemplars of how UEA academics have utilised existing and new exchange partnerships to enhance enriching and long-lasting relationships Discuss the maintenance of these crucial relationships and explore mechanisms used to engage both academic and administrative colleagues at partnering institutions

Case Study: Frederik Byrn Køhlert School: AMA INSTITUTION: School of Humanities and Liberal Studies, San Francisco State University COUNTRY: USA DATE: Ongoing TYPE OF EXPERIENCE: Teaching staff mobility WHAT’S IN IT FOR US? Existing collaborator activities: Co-writing journal article on pedagogical approaches to teaching comics and graphic novels Co-teaching of modules on comics and graphic novels at the University of Calgary Involvement with large research grants anchored at the University of Calgary Personal connection between collaborators is inspiring students from both institutions to study abroad at UEA/SFSU Ideas for future collaboration include: Staff exchange to enable co-teaching and research collaboration Co-taught and split-site modules between UEA and SFSU Research grant collaboration Ideas for future collaboration include staff exchange to enable co-teaching and research collaboration; co-taught modules between UEA and SFSU, either via Skype, through campus visits, or as two-step modules including classes taken at both universities Research grant collaboration

ENHANCING STUDY ABROAD PARTNERSHIPS: ENHANCING THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE - discussion Considering what we’ve heard from these experiences…we ask Claudina and Alfonso to share with us, with staff from the International Programmes and Study Abroad Office… How do we enhance/ enrich long-lasting relationships? What tactics are used to maintain these crucial relationships? What mechanisms are used to engage both academic and administrative colleagues at partnering institutions? How often might we visit a partner institution? How does engaging in other activity enhance the student experience? How do degrees with a year abroad fit in to all this? What advice or guidance is there to support partnership development? And feel free to ask your own questions! In particular focus example on NAFSA…

ENHANCING STUDY ABROAD PARTNERSHIPS: ENHANCING THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE Thanks for joining us! Please come and hear about funding opportunities at the “EXPLORING OPPORTUNITIES FOR STAFF MOBILITY” poster during the breaks!
