Irish Aid Environment Policy for Sustainable Development IUCN / IA Environment Workshop Maputo March 12th 2009

Session Objectives / Overview Re-familiarise ourselves with the Environment policy for sustainable development Thanks to Garvan for giving us this opportunity. Following on from the mainstreaming discussions yesterday. Missed a lot of the session but got some of it. Hope that we can use this hour and a half to at least remind ourselves of the policy, get some practical insights exposure to environment. Hear from yourselves

Policy Goal: To promote environmentally sustainable development that is consistent with the economic, social and environmental needs and priorities of people in developing countries and contributes to poverty reduction Policy launched in April 2007

Objectives To Raise Awareness of the links between environmental sustainability and poverty reduction and to inform development policy To integrate the principals of sustainable development into Irish Aid policies and programmes in order to ensure environmental sustainability Under 1/ Some of the initiatives underway. Poverty environment Initiative, in 9 countries, we are directly supporting

Objectives Cont. To continue to engage with key multilateral environmental agreements and agencies, and to demonstrate our commitment to resolving global environmental problems Assist developing countries to prepare for and adapt to changing environmental conditions while taking action to reduce negative impacts on the most vulnerable members of society
