The Impact of Changes by Heating or Cooling How these changes affect our lives and the Earth

Water is changed by heat… When heat is added to ice it melts and forms water. When heat is added to water it forms a gas: water vapor.

On Earth we see this as… Glaciers melting Snow melting Fog

Adding heat changes the Earth in other ways… The sun warms soil and allows a seed to germinate. The sun warms the sand at the beach. The sun provides heat for plants and animals.

Heat changes the rocks on Earth… Some rocks change because of heat and pressure. Some rocks are formed because the heat inside the Earth is so great it melts them. New rocks are formed when the molten rock cools. Photograph of lava found on http://www.rocksandminerals4u.com/igneous_rocks.html

Heat can cause change by melting...

Heat can cause change by cooking…

Matter can change by cooling… + gelatin +

The Earth is changed by cooling... Water enters small cracks in rocks. The water freezes and expands. The cracks get bigger and will eventually break apart the rock. Snow cools the ground and the atmosphere. The water in the polar regions is cooled and forms ice.

Heating and cooling… Can cause change in the properties of materials. Not all materials respond the same way to being heated. Not all materials respond the same way to being cooled.
