Religious Aspects of Colonization Religious unrest/intolerance in England 1558: England becomes Protestant after Elizabeth ascends to the throne 1600: Spanish Armada defeated Anybody against the Church of England=enemy Fearing intolerance (violence, inability to practice freely), many Christians left Europe in the hopes of religious freedom

Pilgrims—More than just people eating turkey on Thanksgiving Wanted to purify the Church of England, but thought it was too corrupt Settled in the Netherlands first, but worried about loss of culture, religion Mayflower, John Smith & William Bradford, Plymouth Plantation—1620, Massachusetts The Starving Season—the first winter & relationship with the Native Americans

Core Beliefs of the Puritans Providence Typology Human Depravity Covenant of Grace Divine Election

Providence A sense of God working in one’s life on a regular, daily basis. Puritans would “search” their daily lives for signs / symbols of God’s grace (the Bible…diaries were important)

Typology Comparison between human history, salvation history

Covenant of Grace New relationship with God formed through Christ’s redemptive life & resurrection. One must accept Christ & repent n order to accept this covenant. Sins can be forgiven only under this circumstance

Human Depravity Humans tend towards sin because of their fallenness Ever since Eden…we’ve been…well…

Divine Election God has chosen who will be saved, who will be damned

Imagine that you’ve just made this journey aboard a crowded boat…
