Presentation transcript:

Human Visual System Basic Anatomy

Cornea - transmits and focuses light into the eye

Iris - helps regulate the amount of light

Pupil - Responds to various degrees of illumination to control the amount of light that is let into the eye. Pupil

Lens - the transparent structure behind the iris that focuses light rays onto the retina

Vitreous Humor – Maintains eyeball shape

Sclera - the outermost layer of the eye, helps maintain shape of the eye. AKA whites of eyes.

Choroid Coat - the vascular layer, in the middle of the eye, provides eye with nourishment

Retina -. the nerve layer that lines the back of the eye Retina - the nerve layer that lines the back of the eye. The retina senses light and creates impulses that are sent through the optic nerve to the brain Retina

Fovea - responsible for sharp central vision, such as reading or watching TV

Optic Nerve - the nerve that connects the eye to the brain Optic Nerve - the nerve that connects the eye to the brain. It carries the impulses formed by the retina to the brain, where it is interpreted as images Optic Nerve
