INCORPORATING VIDEO GAMES INTO THE LITERARY CLASSROOM BY JERIMIAH BERGSTROM

FIRST QUESTION: WHY? Video games are an emerging art form A unique medium brings unique areas of investigation They have the potential to combine enchantment and critique in exciting new ways

WHAT DOES A ‘TEACHABLE GAME’ LOOK LIKE? SECOND QUESTION: WHAT? WHAT DOES A ‘TEACHABLE GAME’ LOOK LIKE? A DISTINCTION: SPORTS FOCUS ON GAMEPLAY COMPETITION POINTS EXAMPLE: CoD ADVENTURE FOCUS ON STORY PROGRESSION ACHIEVEMENT EXAMPLE: OoT PUZZLE

ARE ALMOST NEVER MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE TO CLARIFY: AND ARE ALMOST NEVER MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE

BUT IF WE’RE TALKING ABOUT INVESTIGATING A GAME AS A TEXT, THEN THOSE THAT FOCUS ON NARRATIVE WILL BE THE BETTER (EASIER?) CHOICE.

THIRD QUESTION: HOW? WITH A WEBQUEST!

USING THE STRUCTURE OF A WEBQUEST, SWBAT: INTERACT WITH GAMES IN A SCTRUCTURED ENVIRONMENT ACCESS SKILL CAPTURE THEIR EXPERIENCES THROUGH ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSES INTEGRATED INTO THE MODULE DEVELOP A SENSE OF THE ARTISTIC COMMUNITY SURROUNDING VIDEO GAMES

THANKS! NOTE: The background of each slide comes from a game I believe would be (mostly, with tweaking) a good fit for this activity. Elegy for a Dead World here Journey here Portal here Bastion here From Dust here Imortall here Thomas Was Alone here
