History Neptune was discovered on Sept. 23rd,1846 by by Johann Galle, Urbainn LeVerrier, and John couch Adams. Neptune was discovered as a result of astronomers efforts to understand the orbit of Uranus. Neptune was discovered in the New Berlin Observatory.

Solar System Neptune is the eighth planet from the sun. Neptune is 4.4 billion km from Earth. A person would weigh 56.2 pounds on Neptune. 165 Earth years = 60,190 Earth days. 1 day = 16.1 Earth hours.

Moons Neptune has 14 moons. They are: Naiad – 1989, Thalassa – 1989, Despina – 1989, Galatea – 1989, Larissa – 1989, Proteus – 1989, Triton – 1846, Nereid – 1949, Halimede – 2002, Sao – 2002, Laomedeia – 2002, Psamathe – 2003, and Neso – 2002, Unamed moon found 2103 know as S/2004N1

Planet appearance Neptune is blue in color. It has 4 faint rings that are thin and are of variable thicknesses. Neptune has a “Great Dark Spot” that is about the size of Earth and similar to the Great Red Spot on Jupiter.

Rings Neptune has four faint rings of variable thicknesses.

Exploration Voyager 2 flew within 5,000 miles of Neptune on August 25, 1989. It flew continuously for two days.

Interesting Facts Stormy and rapid winds can reach 600 miles per hour. Neptune has wisps of white clouds in its atmosphere.
