Energy RESOURCES

What do you think nonrenewable resources are? HMMMM.... What do you think nonrenewable resources are? Break it down... Nonrenewable? Resource?

1. NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES A natural resource that cannot be re-made or re-grown in a reasonable amount of time….that is, we can use it up faster than it can be remade.

2. COAL, PETROLEUM, AND GAS Coal, petroleum, and natural gas are considered nonrenewable because they can not be replenished in a short period of time. These are called fossil fuels.

3. They are 85% of the world’s commercial energy. COAL NATURAL GAS OIL

4. HOW IS COAL MADE ???

last 200 years at present rate 5. What is COAL? Fossilized, condensed carbon-rich fuel 10 X reserves of oil/gas, last 200 years at present rate

6. Effects on health a. Black Lung Disease (miners) b. Respiratory illnesses (public)

7. Effects on land Coal sludge releases Hardpan at strip mines Mountaintop removal Huge water use Slurry pipelines

8. Effects on air Greenhouse gases Toxics sulfur dioxide nitrogen oxides carbon dioxide Toxics Mercury Uranium

9. Acidity of rain pH of 6.0 pH < 5.0 Kills insects, crabs Kills fish, trees

HOW ARE OIL AND GAS MADE ???

11. Advantages of natural gas a. Cleaner to burn - Half as much CO2 as coal b. More efficient – only 10% energy lost

12. Disadvantages of natural gas a. Difficult to transport b. Can be polluting

13. OIL (PETROLEUM) Buried organic matter rich in hydrocarbons

HMMMM.... If nonrenewable resources are resources that cannot be re-made, what are renewable resources?

14. RENEWABLE RESOURCES Natural resources that can be replenished in a short period of time. ● Solar ● Geothermal ● Wind ● Biomass ● Water

15. SOLAR Energy from the sun.

Energy from Earth’s heat. 16. GEOTHERMAL Energy from Earth’s heat.

Why is energy from the wind renewable?

18. BIOMASS Energy from burning organic or living matter. Why is energy from biomass renewable?

19. WATER or HYDROELECTRIC Energy from the flow of water. Why is energy of flowing water renewable?

SUMMARY What are the differences between nonrenewable and renewable resources? Complete section summary (1-6) on page 263.
