THE STRONGER THE CHAIN THE GREATER THE CHANCES OF SURVIVAL The Chain Of Survival THE STRONGER THE CHAIN THE GREATER THE CHANCES OF SURVIVAL

Overview of BLS/CPR steps- 1) Scene safety and Response 2) Activate EMS system –call for AED 3) Compressions ( C ) 4) Airway ( A ) 5) Breathing ( B )

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT SCENE SAFETY- Is The environment safe for me to work in? Is the environment safe for my patient? Can I make it safe? Body substance isolation.

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT RESPONSE:- Is the patient conscious? Shake and Shout !- Are you all right? Quickly scan chest wall for movement If not breathing or not breathing normally- activate EMS system.

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT Call for AED CALL FOR HELP:- In the Hospital: Shout for assistance. Activate the Hospital Emergency Team In the Street: Send someone for help Activate the emergency services- Call for AED

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT Start CPR with Compressions first Locate the midpart of the sternum that is center of the chest wall. Place the heel of the hand over the site and interlock the other hand

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT CPR- Commence External Cardiac Compression. Compression rate –at least 100 per minute and depth- at least 5 cm(2 inch) After initial 30 compressions open airway and give 2 rescue breaths.

' Saving Lives '

Qualities of good CPR Push hard – push fast (5 cm depth) Wait for chest recoil. Minimum interruptions in between.

How to open airway and check breathing? Methods of opening the airway to avoid tongue fall are - 1) Head tilt-chin lift Finger sweep- to clear airway. Technique for assessment of breathing- Look for chest movement

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT AIRWAY: EXAMINE: for foreign bodies, debris etc. CLEAR: Finger sweep, postural clearance, suction. OPEN: Head tilt chin lift, or jaw thrust. MAINTAIN: By the most appropriate method.

OPEN AIRWAY: Open airway with Head tilt chin lift and- Look for chest movement ' Saving Lives '

How to provide rescue breaths? Maintain the airway position Pinch the nose Make an effective seal. Give 2 effective rescue breaths.

Mouth to mask breaths – Open airway with Head tilt chin lift seal the mask as shown on patient’s nose and mouth and give rescue breath of 1 second each and look for chest rise.

Rate and ratio of CPR Provide chest compressions at the rate of at least 100 /minute. After every 30 compressions open the airway and give 2 rescue breaths. Provide CPR in the ratio of 30:2 Like this complete 5 cycles in 2 minutes After every 2 minutes or 5 cycles -assess rhythm and interchange rescuer position. Hands off time at any instance is 10 seconds.

Recovery position- If pulse and breathing started during CPR but patient is not fully awake then give following position- it avoids aspiration.

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT WHAT NEXT: Re evaluate patient’s ABC’s every 1 > 2 minutes. Ensure ALS help is on the way.

THANK – YOU
