Chapter 8 Welcome to the Solar System 8.1 The Search for Origins 8.2 The Birth of the Solar System

What properties of our solar system must a formation theory explain? Patterns of motion of the large bodies the orbit in the same direction and plane Existence of two types of planets, Terrestrial and Jovian Existence of smaller bodies such as asteroids and comets Notable exceptions to usual patterns such as the rotation of Uranus, Earth’s large moon, and the retrograde spin of Venus.

What theory best explains the features of our solar system? The nebular theory states that our solar system formed from the gravitational collapse of a giant interstellar gas cloud—the solar nebula (Nebula is the Latin word for cloud) Kant and Laplace proposed the nebular hypothesis over two centuries ago A large amount of evidence now supports this idea

Close Encounter Hypothesis A rival idea proposed that the planets formed from debris torn off the Sun by a close encounter with another star. That hypothesis could not explain observed motions and types of planets.

Where did the solar system come from?

The elements that formed our solar system were made in an earlier generation of stars and were then recycled through interstellar space.

What caused the orderly patterns of motion in our solar system?

Conservation of Angular Momentum The rotation speed of the solar nebula increased as the cloud contracted due to conservation of angular momentum.

Collisions between particles in the cloud caused it to flatten into a disk

reduce random motion and get all the gases moving in the same direction. They also reduce and up and down motions so the cloud flattens.

What’s the evidence for the nebular theory? We can see stars forming in other interstellar gas clouds.

We can observe disks around other stars.
