Western Powers rule southeast Asia

Pacific rim Pacific Rim: the countries that border the Pacific Ocean Major plantation focus for the Pacific lands: sugar cane Coffee Cocoa Rubber Coconuts Bananas Pineapple

Pacific Rim The Dutch eventually gained control of Indonesia. The British encouraged Chinese to move to Malaysia for jobs. Soon the native Malays were in the minority and conflict broke out.

Lives of Natives Education, health, and sanitation improved for the native inhabitants. When people migrated to work on plantations in SE Asia it changed the cultural and racial makeup of the area.

Siam Siam kept its own power by acting as a neutral between France and Great Britain. It also modernized itself by starting schools, reforming the legal system, and reorganizing government.

US & the Pacific The US acquired the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guan as a result of the Spanish-American war. The US built roads, railroads, hospitals, and schools in the Philippines.

Hawaii America became interested in Hawaii because of the sugar cane crops. American businessmen overthrew Queen Liliuokalani and her monarchy.
