The Fallopian Tube

The Uterine Tubes The Fallopian tubes begin at the junction of the fundus and body of uterus and extend towards the ovary Lateral end free, expanded and open Lateral end has finger like processes called the fimbriae The longest fimbria is called the ovarian fimbria The remainder between the two layers of the broad ligament

Parts The fimbriated end called the infundibulum lies coiled behind the broad ligament Laterally the tube is tortuous and dilated – the ampulla The straight portion adjacent to the uterus – the isthmus The part in the wall of the uterus - intramural part Made of smooth muscle Mucous membrane – folds – ciliated columnar epithelium The peritoneum which covers the tube and forms a sheet is called the mesosalpinx Blood Supply Tubal branch of the ovarian artery – below the tube – between the two layers of the broad ligament – anastomoses with the uterine artery Venous drainage into the internal iliac vein Lymphatic Drainage Lymphatic drainage into the paraaortic nodes
