Graphic Novel Assignment

Warm up SpringBoard pp91-98 Skim the samples from Persepolis and brainstorm characteristics of graphic novels you see in the margins. On page 98, read #4. Do not answer 1, 2, or 3.

goal I will determine a theme (or central idea) from a book I’ve read independently this semester OR from The Giver and analyze its development over the course of the text by interpreting the cause and effect of plot events.

Your task You will create a visual representation in the form of a graphic novel. Student Choice (circle): Choice A: Illustrate what you believe are the essential elements of PLOT in The Giver (OR an independent novel) – introduction, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution, and theme. Choice B: Illustrate what you believe are the steps Jonas (or your book’s main character) takes on the HERO’S JOURNEY, following the steps outlined on Vogler’s 12 Stages of the Hero’s Journey. MAY BE ILLUSTRATED OR CREATED ON THE COMPUTER!

expectations There are two rubrics– decide which you will follow. As we read, highlight ideas that stands out to you. Questions????

expectations This can be created by hand, in publisher, in PowerPoint, on a comic website… but be creative! You may work with a partner, but the pair must be approved ahead of time.

Examples of graphic novels  Dialogue bubbles  Narration to explain

Vertical (up and down) -------->

Rough sketch Before you begin your final draft, you may quickly sketch out your ideas on a rough draft. Decide what will go in each panel. You can have more than 6 panels in your final draft.

Jonas! Precision of language!! Please! Mom? Pop? Do you love me? Jonas! Precision of language!! Please! What a meaningless word! Narrative This is so awkward. One important setting in the novel is the dining area. Jonas' family has an evening ritual. Every evening they tell their feelings about the day. Typically, the mood is peaceful because the family is sharing and bonding, but when Jonas asks his parents if they love him, the mood becomes much more uncomfortable and tense. His parents don’t approve of Jonas expressing emotion. Pages: 6-10

LIBRARY Take AR quizzes, including one on The Giver. Check out a book to read over winter break. This book must be quizzed on for a grade in January. It must be in your reading level. Work on rough draft of comic strip. Work on persuasive essay if not finished.
