***Unit Test on Thursday, December 4, 2014*** Tuesday, December 2, 2014 Objective: Students will determine the polarity of molecules using electronegativity. Warm-Up: 1. Put the following atoms in order from largest to smallest electronegativity: Nitrogen, Carbon, Gallium Which of the following pairs is the Most polar bond? Cl-Cl O-O H-O Agenda Polarity of molecules notes and practice ***Unit Test on Thursday, December 4, 2014***
Polarity of Molecules
Polarity Polarity means that one atom has a stronger attraction of the shared electrons, creating a slightly positive end of the molecule, and a slightly negative end of the molecule. Remember, the parts of an atom have a charge so if you have more electrons, the atom will be more negative. If you have less electrons, the atom will be more positive.
How do You know if Molecules are Polar? They have to satisfy two criteria: There are polar bonds between the atoms The atom Has an Asymmetrical 3D shape
Brain Break: Balloon Toss
First… Draw the Electron Dot Diagram and determine the 3D shape using your VSEPR Chart.
Then… Determine the difference in Electronegativity between the atoms. Practice: BCl3 Cl2O7 NH3 PF3
Finally… Use the “Tug-oF-War” analogy to determine if the molecule has an Asymmetrical 3D shape.
Practice bCl3 Cl2O7 NH3 PF3
