Renew our School! Meadowland PTO 2016 Goal #1 Secure School Board vote for Meadowland renovation in the next couple of years. Please... Renew our School!

Outline About Meadowland Elementary Loudoun County assessment How we scored Recommendations School Picture comparison Meadowland vs Loudoun standards Summary

About Meadowland ~470 Students 26 different languages in our homes! Of 88 total schools*, 41 were built & 20 renovated since 2001 One of ~56 Loudoun elementary schools Only 4 schools are older and unrenovated! Aldie, Banneker, Lincoln, and Hillsboro charter academy Combined attendance of these (2015) was ~497 *Includes AOS and Monroe Tech Info from: http://www.lcps.org/cms/lib4/VA01000195/Centricity/Domain/ 119/FY16-FY20%20School%20Board%20Adopted%20CIP.pdf

About our school, cont’d Sugarland and Meadowland were built with the same design on similar plots Very similar demographics Sugarland ES: Built in 1975 $14M Major renovation in ~2006 (when 31 years old) Meadowland ES: Built in 1979, not renovated when 31, now 37 years old Was slated for renovation but cancelled in order to fund newer schools Info from: http://www.lcps.org/cms/lib4/VA01000195/Centricity/Domain/ 119/FY16-FY20%20School%20Board%20Adopted%20CIP.pdf

Interesting Facts Fact #1: The Sugarland renovation provided design and construction plans for many of the needed Meadowland improvements Fact #2: Since 1987, Loudoun has spent $1.955 Billion on new schools & major renovations* Fact #3: Over $108M is planned for new Elementary schools over the next 2 years hen Meadowland was built there were only ~6,000 ES students in the county… …in 2016 there are ~6,000 in each grade *Capital Improvements

2015 County School Assessment Schools evaluated based on a score sheet Current county school standard set top score at 250 50 areas examined, grouped into 4 categories: (25%) Interior Environment, Safety and ADA (15%) Accessibility Plan and Program Adequacy (25%) Site & Exterior Envelope (35%) Mechanical and Electrical Systems Meadowland rated 131 out of 250 points (~52%) Only 3 schools rated lower for the first two areas above Only 6 elementary schools* rated lower overall (105-130) *Schools with >250 students

Assessment Findings Floor plan is inefficient Rust and peeling paint Damaged & deteriorating masonry Cracking in walls and floors Sidewalks/curbs failing Kiss-n-ride non-ADA compliant Lighting fixtures not working Floor plan is inefficient No clean circulation loop Roof is ballasted EPDM Opportunity for landscaping Antiquated clock system No automated lighting control Sprinkler covers limited area Using old ozone-depleting refrigerant All classrooms have original, worn casework Chalkboards need conversion to marker boards Color on façade is leaching onto the brick below it Roof ladder does not have a safety pole

Assessment Recommendations Needed to meet full ADA compliance: Stage, Restrooms, Kiss-and-Ride and Signage To meet LCPS facility standards: Dedicate gym space with storage and PE office Add dedicated guidance room Add dedicated toilets in kindergarten, 2nd & special ed classrooms Add acoustical wall panels to cafeteria Clinic requires sink Convert chalkboards to marker boards Add enclosed media center with office Old kiln relocated to art storage Change wall partitions to fixed CMU walls

Assessment Recommendations Additional recommendations: Upgrade lighting systems and power Egress lighting at exit doors should be addressed. Add automated lighting control North wing should be enclosed for security purposes Landscaping Replace corroded bolts for Basketball Backboards Clean/paint exposed steel lintels, repair breezeway deck Brick masonry needs control joints (cracks forming) Cooling tower steel – clean and paint with cold galvanizing paint Address unsightly exposed conduit & raceway in the corridors

Summary We have an excellent staff! We have excellent maintenance staff! Received tape to cover chalkboards this summer, and new asphalt for parking BUT … Meadowland is long overdue for major renovations to meet the county’s standards It is a safety need, a security need, and it is about having equity for all our children

It’s Meadowland Turn Please, renew our school… Most urgent needs ADA Compliance Fire suppression Restroom privacy/repair Make window fire exit possible (enlarge) Sidewalk/curbs (e.g. kiss-n-ride) Outdoor benches (e.g entry) Music room carpet Gym/Cafeteria Hall display space Paint library walls
