What is stress? The combination of a new or possibly threatening situation and your body’s natural response to that situation. Stressor: anything that causes a stress response Reframing: changing the way you think about a stressor and changing your response.

What happens when you get stressed? Stress response- AKA “fight or flight”-which means when you feel threatened your body has a stress response. Epinephrine- stress hormone that increases level of sugar in the blood and directs “fight or flight” Hormone: Chemical messenger in the body Fatigue: Feeling of extreme tiredness.

Stress Management The ability to handle stress in healthy ways is stress management. What are some healthy ways to manage stress?

Mental & Emotional Stress Mental- The way people think about and respond to events in their daily lives. Emotional- The way a person experiences and deals with feelings.

Problems Associated with Stress Situations, people, and events that cause a person to feel an emotion are called triggers. The combination of repetitive thoughts and ritual activity is an anxiety disorder called Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. The disorder that causes a person to have moods of extreme sadness or hopelessness is depression.

Problems Continued… An illness in which people have uncontrollable mood changes is known as Mood Disorder. The belief that other people want to harm someone is called Paranoia.
